Unitree B2

About this model

The Unitree B2 is an industrial quadruped for inspection, logistics and emergency work. It measures about 1098 × 450 × 645 mm standing and 880 × 460 × 330 mm prone, weighing around 60 kg with battery. By the manufacturer's table it runs above 6 m/s, jumps more than 1.6 m, crosses obstacles up to 40 cm and climbs slopes past 45°.

Its joints deliver about 360 N·m of torque, 170 % more than the previous generation. Standing it bears more than 120 kg; walking, over 40 kg. The 45 Ah (2250 Wh), 58 V battery gives 4-6 hours: more than 5 hours and 20 km unloaded, over 4 hours and 15 km with 20 kg.

The battery quick-swaps, autonomous charging is optional, and so is a wheeled build. The films and photographs are the manufacturer's own.

The B2 climbs stone stairs while a person pulls it back with a rope

Up the stairs, even when hindered

The climb up a long stone staircase continues even while the robot is pulled backwards by a rope, balance holds without a stop. It takes 20-25 cm steps continuously, tens of metres of them by the manufacturer's table. The ability to absorb an outside disturbance and carry on is exactly what separates an industrial machine from a demo: the patrol does not end because something shoved it.

The B2 steps across a pile of loose wooden beams

Over obstacles, not around them

By the manufacturer's table the B2 crosses obstacles to 40 cm and jumps past 1.6 m, a pile of beams that stops a wheeled vehicle, it walks over the top of. Each leg carries joints of about 360 N·m, so the body holds heading and height even on shifting ground. The manufacturer describes its locomotion as two to three times existing quadrupeds of its class: more load, more endurance and more speed at once.

The B2 walks across a floor strewn with peels and obstacles and over a wooden pole

Stable on the slippery and the uneven

A floor strewn with peels and a wooden pole across the path, the stride adapts on the fly without a fall. The feet sense the ground at every contact, so slippery and uneven floors are handled like clean ones: speed adapts, heading holds. The manufacturer states the same stability on wet and soaked surfaces in real plants a more common obstacle than stairs.

Load and endurance

It stands under more than 120 kg and walks with over 40 kg; unloaded it walks more than 5 hours and 20 km, with 20 kg more than 4 hours and 15 km. The 45 Ah (2250 Wh), 58 V battery swaps without tools and an autonomous charging dock is optional, rounds can run around the clock. For development there is a host computer and open interfaces for the user’s own hardware and logic.

The B2 walks between industrial tanks in a dark hall

Inspection in an industrial setting

A dark hall of tanks, the environment the B2 is built for: routine rounds where you do not send a person every day. Its back takes inspection payloads, a 32-wire automotive-grade LiDAR, a depth camera and a high-resolution optical one, infrared for thermography when needed. The manufacturer lists power plants, industrial sites, construction and emergency response: in all of them the round runs a pre-taught route with live perception of the surroundings.
