A lecture on robotics and automation is delivered through slides and video clips. Pupils or students may never have seen a robot in person, let alone programmed or operated one.

Enrolment in technical programmes, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and automation, is lower than employers’ needs would dictate. Young people do not see these occupations as attractive; they picture their future elsewhere.

Slovenia lags behind the European average in digital skills: 50 % of the population has basic digital skills, the EU average is 54 %, while only 20 % has advanced ones, where the EU average is 26 %.

Meanwhile industry already needs new occupations today: robot programmers, service technicians, operators and trainers of artificial intelligence, and there is a shortage of people able to fill them.

And so your institution stays caught between two pressures that are not easing: young people who are ever harder to enthuse about technical occupations, and an economy already looking for people for a technology that is not yet in the classroom.
